Okay. So I did some research on this one. I knew I haven’t had a soda in a couple years for a reason. Or at least two. Why?
1. It tastes awful.
2. I can always just drink tea or coffee if I need the caffeine.
3. … Read on.
Just by the list of ingredients, I cringe a little.
There is… carbonated water, color (caramel E150d), sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame-K), natural flavorings (including caffeine), phosphoric acid and citric acid.
First of all… what?! Alright, we all know about carbonated water. So why are these other things bad? Keep reading.
A program showed long-term exposure to 4-methylimidazole—a contaminant in the caramel coloring—leads to an increased chance of lung cancer in male and female mice. Also, Aspartame can cause cancer. Although studies with animals show a much larger risk of cancer than with humans, it’s still a good idea to avoid it.
Now. Phosphoric acid. This is the stuff that erodes tooth enamel. Also causes kidney stones and kidney disease. No big deal.
And last but certainly not least, natural flavorings.
‘Natural flavoring’ isn’t necessarily just one thing. Hundreds of chemicals can be used to mimic the taste of ‘natural’ flavors (flavors occurring in nature with no prior scientific meddling), so it can really be anything. That leaves a very large window for virtually any ingredient, my friends. Besides, what is this ‘natural’ flavoring supposed to taste like? Creme soda tastes like creme, Sprite tastes like lemon and lime. Root beer tastes like, well, we don’t really know about that one either. But you get the point. We have no idea what this ‘flavoring’ is.
I must admit, this post isn’t as exciting or gross as the others, but it’s still important to know about.
I bid you good eating.
